Act 2 Scene:5 Solitary

I really do like this scene in the sense that the troublesome battle begins between Hank and his Pachuco friend/side. Hank doesn't want to accept anything that the Pachuco tells him, Hank is still trying to believe that the case will prevail and that the appeal will end up on top and win. I especially like this scene because Hank is really trying to not fall into believing that all hope is lost.

"Not to expect justice when it isn't there. No court in the land's going to set you free. Learn to protect your loves by hiding them in hate ese! Stop hanging on to false hopes. The moment those hopes come crashing down, you'll find yourself on the ground foaming at the mouth. !Como Loco!" Pg. 78

The direct person saying the quote is the Pachuco. The Pachuco tells Hank this while Hank is in prison. The reason why the Pachuco says this is so that Hank can begin to let go of everything he is being lead to believe and start to believe things he once believed, which is that there is no getting out for him, there is nothing left to hope for.

This quote is important because Hank learned to let go of what he once believed in and he now begins to believe in Alice, George, and his community to get him out. Hank changed while in prison, he began to want to believe more in the appeal and everything that was happening and let go of all of that hate, and the uncertainty of another Mexican Pachuco's fate.

QUESTION: In your opinion, why did the Pachuco constantly face a very hard road when it came to accepting what Alice and George were doing for Hank?

  1. It's very interesting what you have to say.;)

As far as for your question, El pachuco seemed to have always depended on himself and no one else, too much pride, too much honor, and all of that didn't allow him to receive any help from anyone because that may make him seem weak, powerless and as far as he knows, he is powerful, strong, and needs nothing from no one. Handling everything that has come to him on his own and receiving no charity from anyone only defines who he believes himself to be, the only way to show no weakness is through acting tough being his definition of a pachuco. His only thoughts of staying in prison are because that is what the whites have done to the so called "minorities" to treat them unfair and send them to jail, that's all that El Pachuco sees and with that, that is good enough for him, good enough to kill any hopes or dreams to being free. El Pachuco tries to make Henry see all of this because this is how he himself sees it and before, there hadn't been any help for minorities, the whites would say something and that would be it, no help to the "minorities" what so ever and now that a big group, that both Alice and George lead, has come to 38th street gang's aid, it may be also difficult for El Pachuco to understand since no one really helps the pachucos/his class, his raza, his family. White being the so-called "powerful" race, makes el pachuco believe that even with all of this help, their word is final, whites' words are the final ones and by this, he believes a life-time of prison and no point to fighting for freedom.

P.S. In reality whites aren't the "supreme" race, no one is because, like it or not we all need each other and without the other, no race would exist

  2. Well, it was hard for the Pachucos to accept Alice and George because most people are taught to trust your own raze. And they didn't think they had much of a change or much help, so when Alice and George came in to the picture they suspected something wrong.they thought that they would be mislead or done wrong. So they were just being over protected and hard headed.
